3 copies, 2 media, 1 offsite — the offsite copy is the one this page provides, and it is the copy that survives ransomware, RAID controller death, and office fires. A practical split: primary on your workstation or production server, a second copy on a NAS or second disk, and Depot 1–5 as the third copy in another jurisdiction. Client-side encryption (borg and restic both encrypt before upload) means the offsite copy is ciphertext — the host stores 1s and 0s it cannot read.

Why not a Storage Box

Hetzner's BX line wins the raw per-TB column near $3.50 and loses the rest of the argument: it is a protocol endpoint (SMB/NFS/rsync), root never arrives, custom agents cannot install, and the account behind it can be pushed into government ID. A target you cannot script freely is not yours.
