What operators actually run

Tor Project: relay operations is the whole checklist: the package, an open ORPort, a reachable contact address, and MyFamily once a second relay exists. Most operators start with a middle relay or a bridge — both are ordinary traffic and need no permission. Exits are a different commitment: allowed on request with a published abuse contact, and they trade quiet bandwidth for a mailbox that actually gets mail. Settling the VPS invoice in coins does not change any of that; the AUP reads the same in every currency.

Sizing the role

Bandwidth class picks the tier: a bridge is tiny and runs on Sentry ($7.50 list, $6.00 annual-eff); a contributing middle is comfortable on Ranger ($12.50 / $10.00) or Warden ($19.00 / $15.20); an exit pushing serious throughput wants the unmetered 10 Gbps of Sentinel or whole cores on the dedicated line from $30.80/mo annual-eff. Reykjavik and Bucharest are the customary flags — no mandatory retention statute at either — while Amsterdam buys exchange-adjacent throughput under EU process. One list price covers the rest of the map.

Limits

CSAM and attack traffic still come down the pipe, and still end accounts — a relay is not an exception to the AUP. You hold root and run the daemon; the host rents the machine, forwards the abuse mail it receives, and reads takedown claims only from law enforcement of the facility jurisdiction.
