DDoS-Protected VPS for Game Servers — Minecraft, CS2, Rust

What a game server needs past the spec sheet: tick rate, slot math, attack reality on public IPs, and placing a community to survive growth and griefers.

Sizing by game
- Minecraft: the RAM eater — count on 8 GB as the minimum once a modded community forms; Warden VPS is the realistic floor, Vanguard for heavyweight packs.
- CS2: tick-rate bound — a strong single-thread clock beats core count (EPYC 9454P on Vanguard/Sentinel).
- Rust: memory and disk I/O — 16 GB+ and NVMe, which every plan carries.
VPS from $3* (fund $50+), storage 1–5 TB NVMe from $24/mo annual-eff, dedicated with IPMI from $30.80/mo. Crypto invoice, no KYC.
Launch nowThe attack reality
Public game servers do get hit — by rivals, by range-scanning bots, by “free booter” users. Built-in L3/L4 filtering soaks up the volumetric part; application-level abuse (vote spam, chat floods) stays plugin territory. That is why the DDoS story belongs in the platform itself, never a per-IP upsell.
Placement
Follow player geography, not price: Dallas for US Central, Tokyo for JP/KR, Frankfurt for EU, Sao Paulo for BR. Twenty-one locations at one SKU price turn a community move into a re-deploy rather than a renegotiation.
Before you launch: a five-minute checklist
- Fix the port plan. Publish only what the game needs - the UDP game port and the query port - and keep the panel and SSH off the public list. Default-deny everything else.
- Snapshot before modpack updates. Snapshotting is a checkout add-on; a pre-update snapshot rolls back a broken modpack in minutes instead of a rebuild.
- Size RAM for the mods, not the game. The table above is the floor for a vanilla class server; every modpack adds RAM hunger on top.
- Watch tick, not CPU percent. A server at 40% CPU with degrading tick rate is already oversubscribed for players - move to the next tier or to the dedicated line before the community feels it.
- Write the abuse reflex down. Chat floods and vote spam are plugin territory; knowing which plugin mutes them is the difference between an evening and a week.
Are game servers allowed?
Yes — game processes are a listed workload; DDoS filtering is included.
How many players fit on a VPS?
Small communities: dozens per plan on Warden/Vanguard. Tick stability and bandwidth are the limits, both visible in your monitoring.
Do I get root for server modding?
Yes — full root on every VPS; custom JVMs, panel software and plugins remain your call.
